In person none of these exist; we will say so in the description if it may be otherwise. VERY few words do this knife justice beyond WOW!
This exceptionally fine vintage cimeter-style butcher knife has everything going for it any user or collector could possibly want and much more. In terms of its rarity or the quality of its materials, craftsmanship, condition or especially performance there is nothing like it in the modern market and damned few like it in history. It's also one of those knives that proves yet again that when American makers put their minds to it they were fully capable of making the best knives in the world. In fact, they still are. As you can see in the photos, it's a beautiful piece, but it's even better looking in person than the digital photos make it look.
Its hand-forged carbon steel blade and its beautifully preserved beechwood handle scales are as useful and comfortable as they are beautiful to look at. Condition is SUPERB, especially considering the fact that this knife is 66 years old; this is a rare instance in which we can know EXACTLY how old it is because it's dated 1951, as you can see in the photos. Its condition is more than a bit rare for a piece of this construction, since they're usually found only after having been so extensively used and sharpened as to be worn down to a nub. Its blade still possesses its original factory shine, appearing like stainless steel but it is, in fact, hand-forged from some of the finest carbon cutlery steel ever forged in this country and must be kept dry during use or will rust--a minor inconvenience vastly offset by the superior performance it delivers, as any knowing chef or butcher can confirm.
The handle of this piece is particularly noteworthy, not only for its full tang, but especially for its outstanding pewter bolster, which expertly joins handle and blade, strengthening both in the process, and keeping your fingers where they belong when using the knife--on your hand. The piece enjoys an extra bit of heft in the hand, further inviting its use. It was expertly made in upstate New York by Geneva Forge, a company much better known for making low-price cutlery for sale in supermarkets and Five and Dime stores. Its markings indicate it was produced under contract for the U.Military, who has, over the years, been the purchaser of some very fine professional cutlery, as the piece clearly demonstrates. This knife comes in a highly-desirable size, measuring 15-3/8" long with 10" blade that is sturdy and stiff enough to be carried into the field as a hunting knife. If you plan on using this knife in your kitchen, I suspect you'll be quite thrilled with its performance. If you're simply collecting, you're in luck--this is a rare opportunity to add some authenticity and quality to your collection, but I urge you not to delay; in over 60 years of actively collecting cutlery, I've seen only one other such as this and it is in my permanent collection. To say it is rare is an understatement.
To say it is an instant heirloom is merely stating the obvious.
