Usmc Wwii Korean War M1 Helmet Set (complete) Fs, Sb, Imp Liner, 1953 Camo Cov
THIS IS A GENUINE ORIGINAL USMC WWII/KOREAN WAR HELMET SET WITH CAMO COVER DATED 1953. IT INCLUDES THE STEEL POT, LINER, NAPE STRAP, SWEATBAND, USMC CAMO COVER, AND LEATHER STRAP (BROKE ON BOTH ENDS, ONE TRIANGLE CLIP MISSING, GREEN HARD WARE, LEATHER FLAKING BUT SOFT AND VERY FLEXIBLE). I THINK THE LEATHER STRAP WOULD BE A GREAT CANDIDATE FOR REPAIR OR RESTORING. THE STEEL POT WAS MANUFACTURED BY THE McCORD RADIATOR COMPANY, AND IT IS A FRONT SEAM, SWIVEL BALE TYPE WITH OD 3 STRAPS. THE CHINSTRAP BUCKLE AND CLAMP ARE MADE OF BRASS. THE SHORT SIDE STRAP CONNECTOR IS MADE OF STEEL. IT'S HEAT NUMBER LOOKS TO BE 912 H, IF SO, IT WAS MFG. I BELIEVE THIS HELMET SET WAS USED IN COMBAT, BUT I HAVE NO PROOF OF THAT, OTHER THAN IT'S CONDITION, AND HAVING SEEN AND OWNED MANY REAL M-1 HELMETS THAT WERE WORN IN COMBAT. THE EXTERIOR PAINT ON THE STEEL POT LOOKS LIKE IT WAS RE-PAINTED BY THE USMC LONG AGO. SEEMS LIKE I READ SOMEWHERE THAT THE MARINES PAINTED THEIR HELMETS A DARKER GREEN COLOR OTHER THAN THE STANDARD O. A GREAT MAJORITY OF THE CORK CAN BE SEEN UNDER THE GREEN PAINT. IT HAS THE USUAL SCUFFS, SCRATCHES, SOME SHALLOW DINGS, AND SOME SURFACE RUST, WITH VERY WORN CHIN STRAPS.... JUST WHAT YOU WANT TO SEE ON A WELL USED M1 HELMET.

AFTER ALL, THE USMC USED THESE STEEL POTS IN MANY WAYS TO INCLUDE COOKING, DIGGING, USED AS A SEAT, CRAPPED IN THEM, WASHED IN THEM, SHAVED IN THEM, ATE OUT OF THEM... THIS HELMET SET IS NOT A BEAUTY QUEEN THAT SPENT IT'S LIFE ON SOME SHELF OR IN A WALL LOCKER FOR THE DURATION OF THE WAR.

LOOK AT THE CHIN STRAPS.... THEY ARE VERY WORN, BUT THEY ARE STILL ATTACHED AND STILL BAR TACKED (SEWN) WITH IT'S ORIGINAL THREAD TO THE SWIVEL BALES. A LOT OF THE PAINT IS STILL ON THE STAINLESS STEEL RIM OF THE HELMET. IT IS IN SOLID CONDITION, AND STILL COULD BE USED IF NEEDED. (INTERNATIONAL MOLDED PLASTICS COMPANY) HIGH PRESSURE LINER IS NICE AND IS MORE RARE THAN SAY "WESTINGHOUSE, " "CAPAC" OR FIRESTONE.

ALL OF THE SINGLE WEAVE HBT WEBBING IS SOLID AND TIGHT, NOT ROTTED. IN THE INSIDE CROWN AREA, THERE IS A SPOT OF YELLOW PAINT PUT THERE LONG AGO. AND, IT HAS IT'S I.

LOGO A LITTLE MAN WITH HIS HANDS ON HIS HIPS IN AN OVAL WITH I. THERE IS ALSO A NUMBER "4" NEAR THE LOGO.

THE "A" WASHERS ARE BLACK AND VERY TIGHTLY IN PLACE. THE SWEATBAND IS IN GOOD SHAPE, THE LEATHER IS A LITTLE DRY, BUT IS FLEXIBLE.

ONE END OF THE LEATHER SWEATBAND HAS COME UN SEWN, BUT IT DOES NOT AFFECT THE SWEATBAND OR THE USE OF IT. IT IS STAMPED WITH WHAT LOOKS LIKE L. THE NAPE STRAP IS NICE AND IS THE LATER WAR TYPE THAT IS ADJUSTABLE.

IT IS STAMP MARKED "SMC 1945" AND A QM NUMBER. IT HAS ALL OF IT'S OF IT'S O. GREEN GATOR CLIPS TO HOLD THE SWEATBAND TO THE WEBBING.

THE EXTERIOR PAINT ON THE LINER IS ORIGINAL, WITH LOTS OF SCUFFS, AND MARKS FROM USE. MOST OF IT APPEARS TO BE MUD. IT MAY CLEAN UP, I'M NOT SURE, I NEVER ALTER MY MILITARY ITEMS. IT HAS IT'S RIVET HOLE IN THE FRONT. THERE ARE NO CRACKS, HOLES, REPAIRS, ETC. IT IS A NICE EXAMPLE OF A I. THE LEATHER CHIN STRAP IS BROKE ON BOTH ENDS (BUT APPEARS TO STILL BE FULL LENGTH). IT IS MISSING ONE SMALL TRIANGULAR METAL CONNECTOR, BUT THE LEATHER IS SOFT AND FLEXIBLE, EVEN THOUGH THE LEATHER HAS FLAKING ON IT. THE HARDWARE IS GREEN AND THE BUCKLE WORKS FINE.

THE USMC CAMO COVER IS REAL, BUT IT IS NOT FROM WWII. IT WAS MADE DURING THE KOREAN WAR SOMEWHERE AROUND 5 YEARS AFTER WWII. IT IS STAMPED BLUE ANCHOR OVERALL COMPANY 29 APRIL 1953 ON ONE OF THE BROWN FLAPS. IT DOES NOT HAVE AN EGA ON THE GREEN SIDE THAT I CAN FIND.

THE BROWN SIDE HAS A VERY FAINT EGA STAMP THAT IS NOT COMPLETE, AND YOU HAVE TO BE LOOKING FOR IT TO FIND IT. THIS COVER IS REVERSIBLE FROM THE JUNGLE SIDE TO THE BEACH SIDE. THERE IS A NUMBER "22" THAT WAS APPLIED BY THE USMC LONG AGO ON THE BROWN SIDE OF ONE OF THE FLAPS. THIS COVER IS THE PATTERN WITH FOLIAGE SLITS (OR BUTTON HOLES). THE COVER IS SOLID WITH NO FOUL ODORS, AND NO ODOR FROM SMOKE. IT IS STILL TIGHTLY SEWN WITH THE "CHAIN STITCH" ON THE BROWN SIDE AND "DOUBLE NEEDLE" STITCH ON THE GREEN SIDE WHERE THE COVER HALVES ARE SEWN TOGETHER. THE EDGES ARE STILL SEWN WITH THE PROPER KOREAN WAR TYPE STITCH MADE BY A SERGER MACHINE WHEN IT WAS MADE. ON THE TOP OF THE COVER THERE ARE A LOT OF TINY HOLES AND NIPS IN THE CLOTH ON THE TOP FROM USE. THERE ARE SOME REMAINS OF RUST ON THE GREEN SIDE, BUT MOST OF IT IS CONFINED TO AN AREA WHERE THE RIM OF THE STEEL POT WAS, AND LOWER ON THE FLAPS ON THE BROWN SIDE.

ON ONE SIDE THERE ARE SOME HORIZONTAL CUTS OR HOLES. ONE IS APPROXIMATELY 3 INCHES, ANOTHER IS APPROX. 1 INCH, AND ANOTHER IS APPROX. 3.5 INCHES LONG HORIZONTALLY WITH AN APPROX. CUT VERTICALLY FROM IT THAT IS APPROX.

ON THE OTHER SIDE THERE IS A HORIZONTAL CUT THAT IS APPROX. 2 INCHES, AND ANOTHER THAT IS APPROX. 3 INCHES AND IS HORIZONTAL, AND THERE IS A VERTICAL CUT EXTENDING UP FROM THE HORIZONTAL CUT THAT IS APPROX. NOTE: YOU PROBABLY KNOW THAT THE INDIVIDUAL MARINE HAD TO CUT A SMALL HOLE ON EACH SIDE OF THE CAMO COVER TO ALLOW THE STEEL POT CHIN STRAPS TO PASS THROUGH. BELIEVE IT OR NOT, THIS COVER CAN BE PUT ON SOMEWHAT DIFFERENTLY EACH TIME IT IS PUT BACK ON. FOR EXAMPLE: THERE IS A "PLEAT" ON TOP OF THESE COVERS, AND IT CAN BE PUT ON THE HELMET IN A WAY THAT THE USMC CONSIDERS BACKWARDS.... MEANING, THE FRONT OF THE PLEAT SHOULD BE FACING THE FRONT OF THE HELMET. AND THE PARTIALLY OPEN AREA IS TO BE FACING TO THE REAR OF THE HELMET. YOU MAY ASK: WHAT IS THE REASON FOR THE PLEAT TO BE THERE ANYWAY? WELL, IT LOOKS LIKE SOMEONE COULD JUST CUT TWO ROUNDED HALVES OF CLOTH, SEW THEM TOGETHER... THEN PUT IT ON THE HELMET... THE "PLEAT" (LIKE IN REGULAR CLOTHING) IS MEANT TO TAKE UP CLOTH AND FOLD OVER IT'S SELF... THEN SEW IT IN PLACE. THIS ALLOWS THE CAMO COVER TO FIT THE M1 HELMET THE WAY IT SHOULD. WITHOUT THE "PLEAT" THE COVER WOULD NOT FIT TOO GOOD, AND THERE WOULD BE AN AREA OF THE TOP OF THE COVER WHERE APPROX. 4 OR 5 INCHES OF CLOTH WOULD BE STICKING UP (INSTEAD OF LAYING PROPERLY TO THE CURVATURE OF THE STEEL HELMET). NEEDLESS TO SAY, NO MATTER HOW MANLY OR STRONG YOU ARE, YOU CAN'T PULL THE CAMO COVER TIGHT AND GET RID OF THE TOP EXCESS SEVERAL INCHES...... IT IS ALSO COMMON THAT SOME OF THE MARINES DID NOT CENTER THE HELMET COVER AND MAKE IT STRAIGHT. SO, WHEN THE NEXT MARINE WENT TO PUT THE CAMO COVER ON A HELMET, THE CHIN STRAP HOLES WOULD NOT LINE UP. NOW, YOU AND I WOULD MOVE THE COVER AROUND UNTIL IT LINED UP WITH THE CHIN STRAPS ON THE HELMET. BUT, NO, SOME OF THEM TOOK OUT THEIR K-BAR KNIVES AND JUST CUT THE HOLES LARGER.... WELL, MAYBE IT WAS GOOD FOR THEM AT THE TIME, BUT NOT TOO GOOD FOR US COLLECTORS. SOME HOLES OR CUTS ARE MADE FROM WEAR AND USE, ESPECIALLY WHERE THE RIM OF THE STEEL POT WAS FOR A LONG TIME. AND, HE SAID THAT THE HELMET DISPLAYS AND LOOKS GOOD AFTER MAKING THOSE MODS. THAT IS AN OPTION THAT YOU WOULD HAVE IF YOU WIN IT. OR YOU COULD JUST LEAVE IT LIKE IT IS.
