There is no way to know if this works without a battery set, but for 70 year old vintage electronics I would not recommend using it.

This is a historical collectors item originally designed for finding portable metallic AP-AT mines. The set was built by the Microtone Company of Minneapolis, Minnesota in October of 1954 per markings on it. This is in good condition with just a little musty smell that could be aired out with a little time.
