1/72 scale aircraft recognition training model of the Douglas C-54G Skymaster USAF four-engine transport aircraft. The C-54 was a military cargo aircraft development of the Douglas DC-4 civil airliner.
The C-54 became the principal aircraft used during the Berlin Airlift (1948-49) because it was able to carry 3 times the load of the twin-engine C-47. Navy also operated the Skymaster as the R5D. A specially outfitted C-54 became the personal VIP transport aircraft for President Roosevelt in 1945, (nicknamed The Sacred Cow), and was subsequently used by President Truman until 1947.
The model is marked on the underside of the right wing in raised lettering: "C-54G USAF Cargo (USN R5D-5), and under the left wing "Property Of U S Government" and the date of issue "Jan 52. Model is made of cellulose acetate plastic. Wingspan is 19 3/8 inches. Because of the limited, regional nature of the Korean War, only short production runs of recognition training models like this C-54 were ordered, making this an extremely rare model of a very important aircraft type. Model is in excellent condition and displays well.
One of the prop spinners is missing, but it is a simple straight rod with no detail and will be an easy fix. Otherwise, the model is 100% complete and all original. The plastic is in great shape and shows no sign of deterioration or vinegar smell.
