Please carefully view the photos as they are an integral part of this description. This Korean Army medal was produced for the fourth anniversary of the formation of the 1st Infantry Division of the Korean Army.
In the center of the obverse is the symbol of the 1st Infantry Division. The English translation of the inscription on the reverse reads. "Establishment of the 1st Division". The 1st Infantry Division is a military formation of the Republic of Korea Army's I Corps.
The division was established on December 1, 1947 in Seoul. This Division was the first ROK Army unit to be attacked by the North Koreans when the war broke out on June 25, 1950. This division held front-line positions along the DMZ after the armistice under the U. The United States entered the war on June 27, 1950, two days after the Division attack by North Korea, under the banner of the United Nations. Because the medal was produced for a commemoration of the establishment of the 1st it is not possible, at this time, to know how many were produced.
Producing a medal for a commemoration of the formation of a division seems unusual. However, this division saw much action during the war and for that reason a commemorative medal might have been issued. The medal measures 1 1/2 by 1 1/2 inches from star point to star point. How did the medal get to the U. Did a Korean soldier emigrate to the U. Did a Korean Army serviceman lose it, or swap with an American soldier? The medal is in excellent condition.
