Who was decorated for valor on 21 September 1950, during the advance on Seoul following the Inchon landing. Romero enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1948 and joined the 1.

Battalion, First Marines on 3 August 1950. By late August he was in the Korean Theater, where he served until early 1951. During this time the First Marines participated in some of the fiercest fighting of the Korean War, including the invasion of Inchon, the capture of Seoul and Battle of the Chosin Reservoir.

Im guessing that he was evacuated due to his physical condition following the Chosin campaign. He continued to serve in the US, rising to the rank of Sergeant, until he was discharged in 1952. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal in 1951 and his permanent citation was sent to him in September, 1953. Romero was born in Port Arthur, Texas in 1930 and died in New Iberia, Louisiana in 1996. The SS, case, ribbon bar and Good Conduct Medal all came as one lot from an estate dealer in New Orleans (not too far from where Romero is buried).

I asked if there were any other medals but there were none. There is no record in his file that he was ever wounded in action. The Star is the Army type and is unnamed as issued.

It is not numbered either. The Good Conduct Medal has official impressed naming. The National Defense and Korean Service Medals are representative of other medals that Romero earned but.

These two medals did not come with the group and are not his actual medals. I have added them for representative purposes only. Romero was also entitled to a China Service Medal, UN Korean Service Medal and a Presidential Unit Citation ribbon bar.

All of the documents shown were scanned from Romeros service file in St. A computer CD-Rom with high resolution scans of 20 documents from Romeros file is included with the medals.

The following is the Wikipedia entry for the First Marine Division during the Korean War. By 1950 the division only possessed the strength of a reinforced regimental combat team.

The division would be assembled on the battle field and would participate in the amphibious assault at Inchon under the orders of General MacArthur. "The Old Breed" was the unit chosen to lead the Inchon landing on 15 September 1950. At Inchon, the division faced one of its most daunting challenges, deploying so hurriedly it still lacked its third infantry regiment and ordered to execute an amphibious assault in a city the size of Omaha, Nebraska under the worst tidal conditions they had ever faced. After the landing they moved north and after heavy fighting in Seoul they liberated the city.

After the liberation of Seoul, the division was put back on ships and taken to the eastern side of the Korean peninsula and put ashore at Wonsan. As part of X Corps commanded by Army Major General Edward Almond the division was ordered to push north towards the Yalu River as fast as possible. The then commanding officer of the division, Major General O. Smith, did not agree with his superiors and had become convinced that they were stretched thin and that the Chinese Forces had entered the war.

He purposely slowed his advance and consolidated along the way at every opportunity. The 1st Marine Division was attacked by ten Chinese infantry divisions on 27 November 1950.

They fought their way out of the Chosin Reservoir against seven Communist Chinese divisions suffering over 900 killed and missing, over 3,500 wounded and more than 6,500 non-battle casualties mostly from frostbite during the battle. The greater part of the Chinese 9th Army was rendered ineffective as they suffered an estimated 37,500 casualties trying to stop the Marines' march out of the "Frozen Chosin".
