This US fighting knife is a post Vietnam (1970 - 1980) commercial production. KA-BAR MARK 2 Combat Utility Knife with a new Black Hide Leather Scabbard.

The utility Mark 2 knife was developed during WW2 and was made by four different manufacturers. Kabar (Union Cutlery), Camillus, PAL, and Robeson-Suredge. The overall length of this Mark 2 is 12 inches, with a 7 inch (17.8 cm) 1095 carbon steel clip point blade and leather-washer handle. Ka-Bar is also the name of the knife manufacturing company, Ka-Bar Knives.

Of Olean, New York, a subsidiary of the Cutco Corporation. Marine Corps officers Colonel John M. Davis and Major Howard worked with cutlery technicians at Camillus and jointly developed the KA-BAR Fighting Utility Knife. Camillus was awarded the first contract to produce the KA-BAR for the Marine Corps. These knives were issued to Marines who did not have a weapon that would mount onto a bayonet, like Machine Gunners, Tankers, and Bazooka Teams. There was also an army version which was the same... This was a very popular knife, not only was it useful in combat but it was also very useful as a tool. The blade's tang goes all the way to the end cap on the handle making it very strong.

The Camillus Cutlery Company was one of the oldest knife manufacturers in the United States, its roots date back to 1876 when the Company was founded by Adolph Kaster (18561946), son of a Jewish family from Wattenheim, Germany, who immigrated to New York in 1870. Opened on Canal Street in New York City, he imported and distributed high-quality German-made knives. In 1897, with new tariffs imposed German knives became too expensive to import. The only solution was to manufacture knives. Adolph joined with Charles Sherwood and began their knife manufacturing Camillus Cutlery Company in Camillus, N.

By 1910, the Camillus Cutlery Company had 200 employees, many of who were skilled German craftsman immigrants, producing close to a million knives a year. In 1963 the Vietnam contract for Mk 2 Ka-bar's had the capital initials NY after Camillus, this contract ended before the Vietnam war did, In 1974 Camillus commenced making the Mk 2 knives for commercial sales, In 1989 Camillus completley changed the stamp designs. #The makers and inspection marks are. CONDITION: This item is Vintage 1970 to 1980s, used, and in good condition. The knife features an original tight leather washer grip which is in good condition, showing a little surface wear consistent with regular use.

The cross-guard is bent up and down respectively, the Blade has worn blued metal finish with some scattered stains and light pitting. The edge is sharp and it appears to have been rarely sharpened. The remaining metal on the cross-guards and pommel also has some stains and marks from use.

Fitted in a correct new black leather hide sheath that has no damage and has an attached web-belt loop with a working snap button and fits tightly together with the bayonet.
