9 bayonet is also known as the Bowie Knife Bayonet and most of these were produced at RSAF (Royal Small Arms Factory) which was the official UK government-owned rifle factory in the London Borough of Enfield, also known as the Lea Valley. The factory produced British military rifles, muskets, and swords from 1816. However, this is a rare PF series No. These particular production series of bayonets were issued with Lee Enfield No. 4 rifles produced at "The Royal Ordnance Factory Fazakerley, " also known as"ROF Fazakerley, ".

For export to foreign countries. Which was originally established in 1941 and ended production permanently in 1960.

The factory manufactured small runs of weapons both during and after WWII for the UK's war effort. The No 9 Mk I has a very interesting history. The British War Department had decided that the age-old series of the unique Enfield No. 4 spike bayonets were consequential of limited use in modern warfare, realizing that they needed to replace the bayonet with a more functional knife bayonet.

Their very first attempt resulted in the innovative No. I/L bayonet, but unfortunately the Department decided against issuing the No.

I blade was patterned on the No. 1 blade had a sturdy socket that pinned the clip point blade of the bayonet. The British retained the No. 5 Mk I scabbard for use with the new No. Production commenced immediately in 1947, even before the new No.

These No 9's were originally produced at the Royal Ordnance Factory, Poole, from 19471949. Production was then transferred to the RSAF Enfield from 1949 up until 1956.

Poole has the makers mark of P within a circle, followed by the year of manufacture. The Enfield maker mark is a superimposed "ED", followed by 2 digits which stand for the year of manufacture. Indigenous versions of the No.

9 bayonets were also produced in Pakistan and South Africa. The No 9 Mk1 was an all-steel bayonet (The socket and blade have been forged separately) The socket configuration is based on the No 4 series, with an enlarged underside of the fore-end which merges with a heavy flat-sided shoulder. The 8 inch Blade form is identical to the No 5 Mk I series with a slim, single-edge with double-edged bowie clip point end, fullered on both sides with the fuller stops squared.

It has a rounded quillback. The blade finish is bright steel except for the last 21 mm. Near the shoulder which is like the socket and is blackened.

#The makers and inspection marks are. SOCKET: No 9 Mk1 over superimposed "ED"- 54. If this is not for you I also have other unusual Militaria Finds in my shop.

Please go to my store to see the full range. This bayonet is 1954 Vintage, Pre-owned and it is in very good condition for its age and use in warfare.

The release button is functioning well. There is a little wear to the blackened finish on the edge.

The blade has a bright polished finish and the edge is sharp and without dings with no pitting. Fitted in a rolled metal Scabbard with raised round frog stud, with a refurbished blackened metal finish, it has no dents, but it is missing the throat piece, but still holds firmly together with the bayonet.
